With both these facts equally true, the best thing a teacher new to Twitter can do is find the right hashtags. Hashtags are, of course, the short phrases prefaced by a pound sign that are used to group conversations and similar thoughts or “threads” into one place. For an educator looking to Twitter for professional development, following the right hashtag is essential.

Below, we’ve listed some of the most useful hashtags out there for educators:

#altedchat: Alternative education educators and topics

#bookcampPD: Discussion of great books for teachers

#earlylang: Language Arts skills for young students

#edtechchat: Discussing technology for educational use

#loveteaching: Teachers share what makes their jobs great

#makered: Bringing the maker movement into schools

#pbl: Project based learning for all grade levels

#primarystemchat: How elementary educators can incorporate STEM learning into their classroom

#ruraledchat: A place to discuss the unique benefits and challenges of working in rural schools

#teacherfriends: Casual, friendly interactions with fellow teachers across the globe
