Five Fun and Educational End of the Year Activities

  1. Write a letter to next year’s class/or a specific student. – Have your students write a letter, either as a whole class or individually, to next year’s class.  The letter can say what they liked, what they didn’t like, and important things to remember, as well as a little bit of introduction to you as a teacher.  How in-depth they go will most likely depend on the grade level.
  2. Academic Olympics – This is a chance to review and reinforce what they’ve learned this year in a fun way.  You can arrange everything ahead of time, or have students organize the events and structure of the day.
  3. End of School Year Timeline – Have students practice those math and social studies skills by creating a timeline of what happened during this school year.  Roll out the chart paper, draw the line, divide up into months and weeks, and then add events and decorate.  Students can add favorite classroom activities like field trips and assemblies, major milestones (like when a new student came or left), particularly memorable lessons, and if they’re older, world events as well.
  4. Hold a “talk show” – Put students in groups to become “experts” on subjects, either covered that year or fun, and designate one as the talk show host.  Students can then take turns being “interviewed” on the topic in the classic talk-show manner.
  5. Host Book Clubs – Let students ease into the summer by reading.  The texts should be more relaxed than your typical literature circles and allow students more freedom in what books to choose.  In fact, these can be almost entirely student-led, with students self-selecting their books, their group, and how much to read in a given day or week.  Allow ample time during class for both reading and meeting with their book club.
