| PACE Supports Depositing Percentage of Student Funding into Classroom Account |

Melissa Nicklas, a teacher in Colorado Springs, commented, “Teachers often spend their own money for their classroom and it can be disheartening to be told time and time again that the school doesn't have money for the basic necessities to do class projects. More money needs to make it down to the class level.” Despite the billions being spent on education today, too many teachers are still being forced to dip into their own pockets to provide project materials, technology, and even basic supplies in their classroom. This innovative policy would tie funding to each student in a classroom and deposit a percentage of that student’s public funding into a classroom account that the teacher could then utilize for funding classroom needs. Since the funding would be tied to the student, teachers with larger class sizes would have more total funds deposited into the account, to ensure equity. “Teachers and community members are understandably concerned that student funding is not making it down to the classroom level,” said PACE Executive Director Dr. Kris Enright. “A policy like this would be a big step in the right direction for funding classrooms and providing teacher empowerment.” As a member-driven organization, PACE urges policymakers to respond to this call for teacher empowerment.
