Union Spending Alarming to Rank and File?

Yet again, the teachers unions are among the largest political funders in local and national elections alike from coast to coast.

 

In addition to early presidential endorsements by both the AFT and NEA, the largest teachers unions in the nation spent a whopping combined total of $32.2 million dollars during in the 2016 election cycle as of the September 30th FEC reporting period. And that number is bound to be even higher when 4th quarter reporting numbers come in.

 

But that's not even the half of it.

Where do the presidential candidates stand on education?

We're getting down to the wire and early voting is already in full swing across the nation. There is so much at stake in this presidential race from education reform initiatives to school funding, yet thousands of Americans are still undecided heading into the 2016 elections. It's absolutely imperative that educators make well informed decisions at the voting booth this November. 

 

PACE is proudly non-partisan, does not endorse candidates, or tell members how to vote. We do, however, urge each and every educator to brush up on the candidates' stances on education at the federal, state, AND local levels before heading to the polls.

College Board Reveals Revised AP US History Framework

Last year, the College Board made waves when it released the revised standards for Advanced Placement (AP) US History.  The revised course was criticized by conservative politicians and pundits for being anti-American.  Many people pointed out that the framework often presented a one-sided view of history in its attempts to explore historical controversies and nuances.

States Rush to Remain Compliant Under NCLB Waivers

With Washington slated to lose their No Child Left Behind (NCLB) waiver over their failure to incorporate student test scores into teacher evaluations, other states are feeling the heat over waiver compliance. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recently warned states he is likely to “revoke a waiver, or two, or three.” Without waivers from the Department of Education, states will be forced to comply with all of the regulatory provisions of NCLB.

Department of Education Launches New Efforts to Increase College and Career Readiness In an effort to increase college and career readiness, President Obama recently announced 24 Youth CareerConnect grants, which will provide a total of $107 million to local partnerships of school districts, institutions of higher education, workforce investment boards, and employers, in order to help these entities redesign the teaching and learning experience, insuring youth are prepared with the knowledge, skills, and industry-relevant education needed to get on the pathway to a successful career.   Continue Reading...
National Board Certification for Principals Debated

National Board Certification is one of the most highly esteemed professional certifications a teacher can achieve. In 2009, the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) began creating a similar certification program for school principals.  With a pilot group of 120 principals invested in the program, the NBPTS executive board is now deciding on whether or not to scrap the program entirely.

House Education Committee Discusses Early Childhood Education

Yesterday the House Education and Workforce Committee held a hearing todiscuss early childhood education. According to a 2012 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, the federal government dedicates at least $13.3 billion each year to operate 45 programs that provide or support early childhood care and education. President Obama has also made it his goal to expand early childhood education into universal pre-k.

President Obama stopped in Memphis, Tennessee yesterday to deliver Booker T. Washington High School's key note graduation address as part of the Department of Education's Commencement Challenge for 2011.
